Tips On How To Avoid Frozen Pipes

Arturo Cruz November 12, 2025

As temperatures start to drop, TEAM CRUZ is giving you tips to protect your home from one of winter’s most common (and costly) problems — frozen outdoor pipes.

Here are simple steps to winterize your hose bibs and prevent damage:

1️⃣ Turn Off the Water Supply:

  • Locate the indoor shut-off valve that controls your outdoor faucet.

  • Turn it off completely to stop water from flowing to the exterior spigot.

2️⃣ Disconnect the Hose:

  • Remove any attached garden hoses.

  • Drain and store them in your garage or shed for the winter.

3️⃣ Drain the Outside Faucet:

  • Open the outdoor faucet to let any remaining water drain out.

  • Leave it slightly open to allow for any leftover water to expand without breaking the pipe.

4️⃣ Insulate the Faucet:

  • Cover the hose bib with a foam faucet protector or insulated cover (available at any hardware store).

  • For extra protection, wrap a towel or insulation tape around it before installing the cover.

5️⃣ Check for Leaks:

  • Once everything is sealed, check both inside and outside for any small drips or moisture that could freeze later.

These quick steps can save you thousands in repairs and help your home stay safe all season long.

Stay warm and enjoy a cozy winter!
