Nicklas Backstrom’s McLean Estate Sells for $11 Million After Price Adjustment

Former Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has officially closed the sale of his luxury McLean, Virginia residence, marking the end of his long chapter in the Washington, DC area. After relocating to his native Sweden last year following a 17-season NHL career, Backstrom listed the newly built estate in April for $14.99 million. The asking price was reduced to $11.9 million in July, and the property ultimately sold this week for $11 million.

The transaction was handled by Compass agents Sherif Abdalla and Ali Alasgar Farhadov, who described the sale as significant not only because of the price point, but also due to the prominence of the seller. According to Abdalla, the sale symbolized a bittersweet moment as the Backstrom family officially closed their chapter in the region.

Backstrom purchased the seven-bedroom, nine-and-a-half-bathroom home in 2021 for $8.5 million—the same year the residence was completed. Designed with the assistance of interior designer Skip Sroka, the property offers a full suite of luxury amenities, including a sauna and steam room, private movie theater, bar, fully equipped gym, elevator, motorized window treatments, and six fireplaces. The primary suite features a covered deck overlooking the grounds.

The chef’s kitchen is outfitted with premium Gaggenau, Sub-Zero, and Wolf appliances, along with custom cabinetry by German brand SieMatic. Integrated sound systems are built throughout the home, including outdoor speakers by the swimming pool.

Backstrom spent his final seasons with the Capitals on injured reserve after sustaining a hip injury in 2023. In late July, he signed with Brynäs IF of the Swedish Hockey League, officially continuing his professional career overseas.
