Why is Albi being talked about so much in 2026?

Washingtonian has named Albi as the #1 restaurant for 2026, marking another major milestone for the Navy Yard standout. The official list of the 100 Very Best Restaurants will be released on January 20, but this top ranking was revealed early—and it’s a big deal.

Has any restaurant held the top spot more than once?

Yes, but it’s rare. Washingtonian has been ranking restaurants since 2007, and only a handful have claimed the #1 position multiple times. Icons like The Inn at Little WashingtonCitronelle, and Komi have done it before. What makes Albi’s win notable is that it’s the first restaurant in more than a decade to hold the top spot two years in a row.

What makes Albi stand out this year?

While Albi was already exceptional, several changes elevated the experience even further. Last spring, chef Michael Rafidi temporarily closed the restaurant to redesign the space. The dining room now feels darker, moodier, and more immersive, with a new lounge area adding to the atmosphere.

One of the biggest upgrades is the removal of barriers between the dining room and the open kitchen. Guests now feel fully connected to the massive hearth and the cooking process itself, creating a shared, communal energy—especially for those seated at the coveted hearth tables.

How has the food evolved?

Albi has always drawn from Levantine cuisine, but Rafidi is now leaning more openly into his Palestinian heritage. The menu reflects dishes inspired by the food he grew up with, interpreted through a refined and contemporary lens.

The Sofra tasting menu has also evolved. It’s more luxurious, more seasonal, and constantly changing. The meal begins simply—with olives and pickles—before unfolding into a progression of elevated dishes: ember-roasted mussels with arak butter and caviar, airy pita with rich dips, delicate dumplings with urfa chili crisp, and other intricate plates.

The standout finale? A generous and unforgettable lamb feast that brings the entire experience together.

Why was the decision to rank Albi #1 so clear?

Beyond technical excellence, Albi delivers something deeper: a strong sense of identity, storytelling through food, and a dining experience that feels intentional from start to finish. From flavor to atmosphere, everything feels cohesive and confident—making the decision an easy one for Washingtonian’s editors.

What about the rest of the list?

Competition continues to grow fiercer every year, and the remaining 99 restaurants will be revealed when the full list goes live online. Readers can also look forward to the printed edition, which hits newsstands on January 22.
